The Graduate School of Journalism, City University, London

city universityThe Graduate School of Journalism, City University, London, the UK’s biggest graduate journalism school, invites prospective students and any interested others to an open session. The open session will offer prospective students the opportunity to get to know the journalism school first hand – its admission procedures, its courses and what it offers in terms of career prospects post graduation. Particular attention will be given to the Masters in International Journalism, an annual course especially designed for students who do not live in the UK.

The open session will be divided in two parts – a presentation of the journalism school of about 30-40 minutes by Professor Adrian Monck, head of the Graduate School of Journalism, to be followed by an informal mix and mingle session. Alumni of the Graduate School of Journalism who live and work in Italy, together with students currently studying at the school, will be on hand to provide their personal perspective.

The Masters in International Journalism is especially designed for students who do not live in the UK. About 70 students from all over the world take the course each year. The course lasts for 12 months.

The course has a high emphasis on developing practical skills in print or broadcast journalism and focuses on “learning by doing” – students cover real stories and produce newspapers, manage a radio station, broadcast on the internet, and produce television news programmes and multi-media websites. An internship is a key part of the course. Students choose between two specialisations: print journalism and broadcast journalism (radio and television). Students learn and develop practical journalism skills in their chosen area.

The university journalism department has a new building with the following facilities:
> a TV and video programming studio
> 2 radio studios
> 2 radio broadcast newsrooms with high-tech facilities that will enable students to learn how to produce a radio programme
> 2 print newsrooms with high-tech facilities that will enable students to learn the skills required to produce newspapers, magazines and websites
> 2 TV broadcast newsrooms with high-tech facilities that will enable students to learn about TV production
> 2 open-access Mac rooms for desk-top publishing, multimedia production, and general student use

To be selected for the masters course the candidate must have a university degree (in any subject) and must demonstrate an interest in journalism (work experience, etc). If the first language of the candidate is not English, he/she must have a result of 7.0 or above in the IELTS English language test. Candidates with an IELTS score of 6.0 or 6.5 may also be selected if they successfully complete City University’s 12-week English course. The university does not accept TOEFL or any other English language test. The cost of the Masters course for European students in the academic year 2008/09 is 7,400 pounds (about 8.000,00 euros).

Possibilities of work after the course are excellent. Former students work for international news organisations like Al-Jazeera, CNN, APTN, BBC World Service, France 24, Dow Jones and Swiss Radio International. Students also join the course’s alumni network which currently has around 1,150 people all over the world.
